Discover Rragam: A Lakeside Escape Steeped in History near Shkodër
Tucked between rising mountain ridges and the serene waters of the Vau i Dejës artificial lake, Rragam (part of the Guri i Zi municipality) is a tranquil haven located just outside Shkodër.
The eastern edge of the village meets the lake and its state-protected dam, while the local Bistall stream winds through fertile fields. In the Kryethi quarter, nutrient-rich soil supports the cultivation of high-grade local tobacco, a craft nurtured by generations of farmers.
Rragam serves as an ideal base for history lovers and outdoor explorers:
Gajtan's Illyrian Fortification: Located a mere 5-minute drive from the village center.
Shurdhah Island (Medieval Sarda): Accessible by a scenic boat ride roughly 6.4 km away, housing the dramatic ruins of the medieval city of Sarda.
Summer Lake Beaches: On warm weekends, sandy patches along the lake shoreline draw residents and day-trippers seeking swimming and fresh lakeside air.
Community life runs deep in Rragam. Children attend the "Tonç Gjon Toma" elementary school named after a local figure executed during the communist regime and the "Engjëlli i Rojës" kindergarten run by the local parish, which also serves children from Gajtan and Guri i Zi. Increasing focus on education has led local youth to pursue university degrees across Albania and abroad.
While economic migration led many families to Italy, Greece, and the United States, a promising shift is underway. Several diaspora members are channeling their earnings back home, restoring stone houses and establishing guesthouses (bujtina) and local businesses to share Rragam's peaceful landscape with travelers.
